Message from the Editor

Welcome to the first edition of WCA newsletter for the year 2011.We hope you had an enjoyable and relaxing holiday.

Thank you all for making 2010 a great year, and much appreciation to all who helped out in the planning, organising and running of the events.

Last year we had many succesful and exciting activities, as we head into the new year, the committee has planned many more activities. Please do join us by participating in all of the activities planned.

The President's Corner

Firstly, I would like to wish all members a happy new year 2011. Soon we will be ushering in the new Lunar Year, the year of the Rabbit.

We hope you will join us in celebrating Chinese New Year on the 9 Feb 2011. Please see enclosed document for term 1 activities.

I would like to thank my committee of management for delivering a series of eventful activities for the year 2010 and looking forward to another successful year in 2011.

I would also like to thank the City of Whittlesea, Victorian Multicultural Commission, our major sponsors, for supporting some if not all of the activities. Without the funding WCA would struggle to run these activities.

Lastly, but not least I would like to wish everyone a Happy Chinese New Year, Gong Xi Fa Cai

The Year of the Rabbit

Cuddly, warm and affectionate are the attributes of the Rabbit. Mysterious and a great party-giver and host, the Rabbit enjoys being the centre of attention once in a while. The Rabbit is occasionally over cautious and can be a bit boring. He is also one of the luckiest signs in the Chinese Astrology chart.

Forecast for 2011 The Rabbit will have found the momentum during 2010 quite unsettling, little realizing that his accomplishments during the year will set him up beautifully for his own year in 2011. This will be a stunning and most favorable year for him, especially in regard to work and career. His ability to interact with others will put him in the lead for any promotions at work. Also, if the Rabbit is considering a completely different career, this is the perfect time to explore his options. Not only will the change energize him but he will feel happier than he has done in some time. March to May and October to November will be important times for career developments.

Finances during the Rabbit's own year are buzzing, with his luck running high! He may see a salary increase, receive a gift or make extra money from a hobby or entrepreneurial idea. Socially, August, September and December will be hectic! Single Rabbits could meet their significant other this year and the relationship could move very fast. Those with partners will find their relationship becomes more serious and important. Stress and worry over decisions may drain the Rabbit's vitality during 2011 and it's very important he gets enough

rest and relaxation. He must also remember to call on friends and loved ones for support and advice during any challenging times.

Bee Yew

Bee Yew was born in Malaysia to a family of 3 sisters and 3 brothers. She is married to Albert and migrated into Australia in 1986. Together they have two daughters.

Bee has been involved in the Chinese community for more than fifteen years. She loves cooking, art & craft, walking, volunteer and charity work. Accounting work is her passion. She has been working in Finance department for more than twenty years.

Apart from cooking her favourite pastime is relaxing with a book and spending time with the family.

Hi Arthur

I' like to thank you for the providing an opportunity to join your
program. It is a great way to talk about the changes in education and I
think your listeners, parents in particular, want to hear about these.
We often read about the enormous challenges facing our young people but
there are far greater opportunities and I think we need to be very vocal
about these.

It was interesting to hear Sam's views on the role of local government
as there is far greater communications now between school, local council
and community groups. I'd like to see that continue to grow in a quest
to provide better resources for community.

Chinese Festivals 2009 - Dragon Boat Festival (6/6/2009)

The Dragon Boat Festival (Tuen Ng Festival) is one of the annual Chinese festivals in the Chinese Calendar. The Festival is celebrated with dragon boat racing and eating rice dumplings. It commemorates the death of Qu Yuan, a minister and a Chinese poet in the government of state of Chu, who drowned himself during 277 BC in protest against a corrupt government. As the townspeople rowed out to save Qu Yuan, they threw rice dumplings into the sea to keep the fish from eating his body and beat drums to scare fish away. You can find information about the festival at your local libraries from books and internet.

Prior to 6 June, there will be story-telling of the Dragon Boat Festival, children’s colouring, Nintendo Wii and computer game competitions at the Lalor Library.

On Saturday 6 June, there will be announcement of children’s activities winners, demonstration of Chinese artworks, door prizes, rice dumplings making, feng shui consultation and information sharing. Entertainment includes Chinese and other cultural performances, fashion parade of costumes and short play. Light refreshment will be provided.

Information Session: Overseas Qualifications Recognition and Immigration Services

On Thursday 13 November, an information session on Overseas Qualifications Recognition and Immigration Services was held at the Thomastown Library. Arthur B.W Yong, JP, Chairperson of the Linked Interconnect Strengthen Activities and President of the Whittlesea Chinese Association, organized this event.

Mr. Yong commenced the evening by introducing the participants in the presentation. Firstly, Cristina Marras, Communications and Public Relations Adviser at Spectrum Migrant Resource Centre (SMRC), presented information on the immigration services provided by the SMRC through Spectrum Immigration Services (SIS).

SMRC is a not-for profit organisation that supports migrant and refugees in Victoria to reach their full potential. The SMRC offers a “one stop-shop” for migrants and refugee families and individuals that are new to Australia, through many re-settlement and integration services and programs such as employment, education and training services, aged and disability services, culturally and linguistically specific aged home care, personal support for carers’ families, youth and parenting programs and immigration services.

During the evening, Cristina Marras presented the work done at Spectrum Immigration Services, with an overview of the main categories of visa existing to enter Australia both as a migrant and as a visitor.
Following Cristina Marras’ in depth presentation, Inaam Barakat, manager of the Overseas Qualifications Unit (OQU), spoke about the services that the OQU offer to assist permanent residents in Victoria. This organization works to help migrants seek recognition for their qualifications and skills. They provide academic assessment of overseas qualifications, career/vocational guidance and information and referral services.

Both the Spectrum Migrant Resource Centre and the Overseas Qualifications Unit are beneficial organizations that strive to assist new residents in Victoria with the often difficult process of settling in.

The session proved to be a success with both informative speakers and an eager audience.

Speaking at the information session on Thursday 30 October 2008 at the Thomastown Library, Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne paediatrician, Dr. Anton Harding called for parents to be vigilant in managing their children's asthma. Dr. Harding, not only explained asthma in a way that everyone could understand with his diagrams, hands on relievers, and other asthmatic preventers reinforced his talk on how to look for symptoms, different types of asthma attacks and how to treat a child, who has an attack.

Dr. Harding encouraged families, who had children or elderly members with asthma, to exercise regularly and ensure that they knew where and who to contact in the event of an emergency. He urged parents, who suspected their children of asthma, a very common childhood complaint to seek the advice of their doctors. Asthma is exploding as a childhood disease and increasing as a cause of chronic illness for elderly residents of Whittlesea.We found that his statistics on number of Australians with asthma, the ages of boys and girls with asthma and how people can prevent an asthma attack in the home by the elimination of dust mites were so informative. His main message for asthmatics whether it be children or adults is to exercise regularly and have an asthma plan. Lucy’s child has asthma, she asked about Asthma Action Plan.

Dr. Harding congratulated the Whittlesea Chinese Association and its President Mr. Arthur Yong for promoting improved awareness of asthma within the Whittlesea Chinese community. He said that he was especially impressed that members of a large local ethnic community had undertaken to bring this knowledge to its Chinese members and other communities, who spoke
little English. Mr. Yong used to assist Dr. Harding at the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne for his clinical research project, related to an asthma medication, prednisolone/prednisone.

Susan Preece currently works on the Asthma Foundation of Victoria’s Help Line where she educates and counsels hundreds of people each year about their asthma. Susan has also coordinated the Asthma Friendly Schools Program and other asthma projects to assist people with asthma and their careers to achieve the best quality of life possible. Susan, being an asthmatic herself, asked everyone to be vigilant as asthma can be deadly, especially for elderly. Susan told about how the Asthma Foundation is only a telephone call away for any information required. Her brochures and magnetic information were first class.

Mary commented, “I am asthmatic and have been since about two year old and I have been to many information talks on Asthma and feel that this has been the best presentation I have attended.”

There will be release of new versions of this brochure at different times.

WCA's Australia Biggest Morning Tea: Donations in support of Cancer Cancer

Chilli Chicken (Home Made)

Ingredients

· 16 chicken pieces
· 4 table spoons (tbs) Olive Oil
· 1 clove chopped garlic
· 12 thin slices ginger
· 1 tsp Massel Stock Powder Vegetable (No animal content, no added MSG, 99% Fat free, Gluten free, Lactose free)
· 2 tbs Chilli powder for Chicken (Any Asian Store)
· 4 tsp Kikkoma Natural Brewed Soy Sauce (Contains absolutely nothing artificial)
· 12 small slices of Cauliflower
· Steamed rice

Place chicken pieces in an oven plate. Combine pieces with oil, garlic, ginger, vegetable powder, chilli powder and soy sauce. Mix well.
Cook chicken in an oven 2200C for one hour.
Check chicken pieces every 25 minutes for that one hour, turn pieces over, to ensure other sides of the pieces are cooked.
After cooking another 25 minutes, add cauliflower. Mix well.
Cook for another 10 minutes.
When chicken and vegetables are cooked, serve at once with steamed rice.

Seafood Hokkien Noodle (Home Made)

Ingredients
· 250 g Hokkien Noodle (Tak On Food Products Pty Ltd, Cholesterol free, 97% Fat free 500 g net)
· 200 or 300g Seafood: Marinara fresh or frozen pack
· 2-3 table spoons (tbs) Olive Oil
· 1 clove chopped garlic
· Slices of Broccoli or lettuce
· 2 or 3 tsp Oyster Sauce (Lee Kum Kee, Panda Brand, 510 g)
· 1 tsp Massel Stock Powder Vegetable (No animal content, no added MSG, 99% Fat free, Gluten free, Lactose free)
· 2 or 3 tsp Sweet Chilli Sauce for Chicken (Any Asian Store)
· 2 tsp Kikkoma Natural Brewed Soy Sauce (Contains absolutely nothing artificial)
· ¼ cup Water
· 1 tbs Fried Onion (Wah Lien Trading Pty Ltd. Weight 200g)

Heat 2-3 tbs oil in a frying pan or wok large enough for the noodles.
Add seafood, add Massel stock powder and garlic.
When the seafood looks cooked, add noodles.
Soften the noodles by adding water.
Season with oyster sauce, sweet chilli sauce and soy sauce.
When the noodles look cooked, add slices of vegetable. Mix.
Add 1 tbs fried onion. Mix all contents in the pan.
Serve immediately.

1 cup rolled oats
3/4 Cup coconut
1 cup plain flour
1 tsp bicarb soda
2 tbsp boiling water
1 cup sugar
125 gm butter
1 tbsp golden syrup

1. Combine oats, flour and coconut
2. Melt butter, sugar, heat till melted
3. Add golden syrup
4. mix soda with water, add to butter
5. Stir into dry ingredients
6. spoon dessert spoon mixture on trays

Slow oven (150 C) 20 minutes makes 35
Allow room to spread

FROM LITTLE THINGS, is a tale of wonders, a story of two lovers living in the same country yet inhabiting different worlds. A haunting and layered piece which explores the collision of modernity and the past, home and culture and what it means to be a human, a lover, a son, a daughter, an Australian.
Traversing back and forth in time, us, the audience, is taken on a spellbinding journey, through memories and myths. All brought vividly to life using elements of martial arts, dance, storytelling, music and song. We visit battle fields in ancient China, the gold fields of Bendigo, present-day Melbourne and the many decades in between.
We watch as through re-discovering the stories of their ancestors, these lovers weave their disparate lives together to create a new shared history and a deeper understanding of the basic humanity which connects us all. We see them buckle under the weight of history and stand tall in the knowing that it is, From Little Things that big things grow.

Written and directed by award winning theatre maker Aurora Kurth.
Performed by Aurora Kurth and Joshua Erwin.

Plenty Valley FM is the Community Radio Station that reaches the areas on the north eastern fringe of Melbourne, specifically within the Cities of Whittlesea and Banyule and the Shire of Nillumbik.

Plenty Valley FM is the local Emergency Services Broadcaster for this area and is a vital link in the provision of important Emergency Services messages to the Community at large.

From Monday to Friday, it has a variety of shows, such as Breakfast Show, Midday Show and Drive Show in English. For Saturday and Sunday, it covers sports and a variety of entertainment, artistic, lifestyle shows.

Chow副教授, Dr Xiangru Wu及其他社区領袖和朋友.
尼利市长祝贺大家新年快乐, 回顾了澳大利亚以及威特西市的华人史, 并赞扬了翁文华先生及其写作小组的工作, 赞扬了该书对澳大利亚华人史,乃至对澳大利亚历史的贡献.
翁文华先生编写整理的前两本亦与威特西市华人历史有关. 该书的编撰由翁文华先生指导,由五位年轻人采访写作. 他们采访了威特西市二位澳州人十五位华人, 记录了他们的移民历程, 讲述了华人的故事. 采访之前, 翁文华先生及其写作小组均会向受访者提供准备好介绍性材料, 采访中翁文华先生也全程在场, 通过录像机记录采访的过程. 该书的出版,得到威特西市, 州政府 Victorian Multicultural Commission的经济资助, 还有雅拉普兰迪地区图书馆 (Yarra Plenty Regional Library) 的支持.当然还有籌備會委員及很多志愿人员的帮助.
罗伯特帕斯科先生是知名历史学者,他如数家珍地讲述了维多利亚州淘金时代华人的历史和文化,介绍了他向新移民介绍维多利亚州历史的情况,巴拉瑞和本迪戈的华人历史纪念场所的来历,墨尔本唐人街的丰富历史.他还向来宾们点出维多利亚州几处华人蔬果圆的旧址,让来宾们回想起当年为社区提供蔬果的重要场所.
最后的发言人是维多利亚州社区发展部部长兼能源与资源部部长彼得巴契勒先生.他已经阅读过这本新书, 他把新书的一些内容向来宾进行介绍, 一起分享他的感受. 他同时也赞扬了翁先生及其协作小组的努力.
仪式进行过程中,有数个艺术节目穿插进行,如吴基华夫妇的太极拳表, Eleanor Yeo 女士的彩带舞, David Chen 的大提琴表演都给仪式增加了许多气氛. 最后翁文华先生的幽默演讲, 以和Tasi女士合唱的 <> 将仪式推向了高潮.接着, 大家一边品尝点心,和新好朋友聊天,等翁先生为新书签名,在愉快的氛围中结束了首发仪式.如读者需要了解有关这个节庆的信息, 请联系翁先生, 电子邮件地址：wca1256@gmail.com

The book is not for sale. Hope this will be a suitable substitute for everyone and hope you all enjoy the book as much as it was a pleasure for Arthur to write it.

Welcome to the Whittlesea Chinese Association Website

Many local Chinese residents living and working in the City of Whittlesea migrated from Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, mainland China, Macau, East Timor, Vietnam, Taiwan and Cambodia. Hence a local Chinese association was proposed in 2006 to meet the social, cultural, educational, recreational and other needs of the Chinese community within the municipality.

It was agreed that the main venue for the association activities would need to be acessible to local elderly Chinese residents and that the association would aspire to promote better community relations and an understanding of Chinese history, art and culture amongst the residents of the City of Whittlesea. The establishment of the Whittlesea Chinese Association (WCA) occurred on 3 June 2006 to cater for those needs.

The Association members speak a variety of languages and dialects, including English, Cantonese, Mandarin, Hakka, Hokkien, Malay, Vietnamese and Timorese.

The latest Census of 2006 shows there were 3,369 people within the municipality who identified their ancestry as Chinese, an increase of 16% since the 2001 Census. Of these groups of Chinese ancestry residents, 3,107 have both parents were born overseas, while 89 stated that only one of their parents was born overseas and 78 have both parents born in Australia; and 95 people normally speaking a Chinese language at home had also risen significantly, to 2,611 at the 2006 Census. The main Chinese languages remained Cantonese (1,156) and Mandarin (925), both of which showed a significant increase in number, while the number of people speaking Hakka, Teochew, Hokkien, or other Chinese dialects remained about the same.
